I am a member of the Burmese diaspora in the UK, concerned about the ongoing isolation of our leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

Since December 2022, the junta has cut her off from the outside world. Despite claims she has moved from solitary prison confinement to a specified house, her family, legal team, and Burmese people have no verification of her location, health, or well-being. There is no independent "proof of life."

The junta has rejected requests from the UN, ASEAN, and regional leaders to meet her, including visits by UN Special Envoy Noeleen Heyzer and ASEAN envoys Erywan Yusof and Prak Sokhonn, as well as regional leaders like Cambodia’s Hun Sen and India’s Harsh Vardhan Shringla. Her legal team has been blocked from seeing her since late 2022, and her UK family denied communication.

Reports of her deteriorating health —severe dental issues, low blood pressure, heart conditions — are unverified, raising alarms.

On June 19, 2026, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi will turn 81 in detention.

Given the APPG on Burma's support for democracy, I urge a public, cross-party statement to:

1. Demand proof of her well-being from independent sources.

2. Condemn the junta's refusal to allow international access.

3. Urge the UK Government to seek direct, face-to-face access for a British diplomat to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to assess her safety and detention

4. Call for her unconditional release and that of all political prisoners.

The regime's isolation is a psychological tactic. A timely UK Parliament statement before her birthday would show that the international community hasn't forgotten her or Burma’s fight for democracy.
